Our Story

MOCO Black Sauce traces its roots to a heartfelt legacy and a spark of inspiration shared among lifelong friends. The journey began back home in Ghana, where my grandmother would lovingly prepare a peppery, rich sauce to accompany me to boarding school. In that all-girls’ high school, the black chili sauce, popularly known simply as “Shito” or "Moco" (meaning pepper in the native language), became more than just a condiment. My grandmother's MOCO transformed the taste of ordinary dining hall meals, adding layers of flavor, and heat—just the way my grandmother knew would feel like home. MOCO embodied more than just spice; it held a spectrum of seafood flavors and memories that stayed with me long after school days.

Years later, during a reunion with two cherished friends from high school in Miami beach, May 2023, we spent the day at the Afrochella Concert, soaking in the rhythm, colors, and tastes of African and Caribbean heritage. After a delightful beach side Mexican lunch, our conversations unfurled experiences ff the day. In that moment, visions of diverse sauce variations and their versatility took hold.

MOCO Black Sauce was reborn with three distinct levels of heat—mild, medium, and hot—each bottle a reflection of that fiery, flavorful seafood taste. MOCO’s versatility and adaptability honor that childhood spice, but elevate it into a bold new form, designed to bring flavor to everything from tacos to grain bowls. Today, MOCO Black Sauce invites you to add a touch of Ghanaian warmth to your meal, inspired by a grandmother’s love, memories of home, and the vibrant energy of Afrochella shared among friends.

Each bottle tells a story of heritage, friendship, and the journey of flavors that transcend boundaries—one layer of spice at a time.
